Audi Lemon Law: Warranty, Dispute Program & Your Rights

The short answer

A new Audi is covered by your state’s lemon law. Audi’s 4-year / 50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs well past every fixed state window, and Audi is a national participant in BBB AUTO LINE, a free dispute program.

An Audi is a big purchase, and an electrical fault or warning light that keeps coming back takes the shine off quickly. Under your state’s lemon law, Audi can be required to replace the car or refund the price if it cannot fix a serious defect in a reasonable number of tries.

Here is what Audi publishes about its warranty and dispute program, and how they line up with the lemon law in your state.

How long state lemon laws protect a Audi

With 4 years / 50,000 miles of basic coverage, your Audi’s warranty usually outlasts its lemon law window. A two-year state closes the window with 2 years of warranty to go; a one-year state, with 3 years. Repairs in that gap are free, but they rarely count toward a buyback.

Three years11 year of basic coverage still left
Two years212 years of basic coverage still left
18 months330 months of basic coverage still left
One year233 years of basic coverage still left

Many windows also stop at 12,000 to 24,000 miles, long before the 50,000-mile limit on a Audi warranty. Find your state’s exact rule in our state guides, or check your Audi repair history against your state’s window.

Audi’s dispute program

BBB National Programs lists Audi as a national participant in BBB AUTO LINE, so certain warranty and lemon law disputes are accepted from every state. Its Audi program summary sets out which claims Audi has agreed to arbitrate. Volkswagen, Audi’s sister brand, is also a national participant.

The program is free and does not need a lawyer. Call 1-800-955-5100.

Leased and certified pre-owned Audis

Many Audis are leased rather than bought. Every state we track covers leased vehicles in some form, though the details differ: who receives the refund, how the lease payments are credited and what happens to the leasing company’s interest. Your state’s page explains it.

A certified pre-owned Audi is a different case. Audi’s CPO limited warranty, 1 year or 20,000 miles, is a separate warranty that starts after the new-car warranty. Whether a used Audi is covered by the lemon law depends on your state: some protect a later owner while the original warranty is still running, others only cover new vehicles, and a few have separate used-car rules.

Things Audi owners should know

  • Audi’s 4-year warranty means repairs keep happening long after most state windows close. Track which repairs fall inside your state’s window; those are the ones that count.
  • Software updates and module reprogramming aimed at your complaint can count as repair attempts, depending on your state. Make sure the repair order says what they were for.
  • If you lease, read your state’s page. Every state we track covers leased vehicles in some form, and each explains how a lease refund is handled.

What to do if your Audi is a lemon

  1. Get a repair order for each visit to the Audi dealer that shows the complaint, mileage and how long the car stayed.
  2. Check for open recalls on your VIN.
  3. Send written notice to Audi of America, using the address in your warranty booklet or the one your state requires, with our notice letter generator.
  4. Look up Audi’s BBB AUTO LINE program summary and call 1-800-955-5100 for a free hearing.
  5. Take the claim to your state program or court before the deadline if BBB does not settle it.
